whytejam.es is hosted by Tumblr, who are an extraordinarily cool bunch of kids, and if you are looking to set up your own blog they come with my highest recommendation.
The basic look and feel of the site comes from a talented man called Bill Israel. I’ve done a fair bit of customisation, though more in terms of adding features than changing his actual design.
For example, I’ve installed two user comments systems; a newer one based on the Facebook open graph, the second, older one powered by Disqus and hidden by a collapsible section. There are social networking plugins from AddThis, a Facebook ”like” button, a Twitter retweet button, a Twitter follow button, an online users counter, a tag cloud, an email contact form, a search bar and analytics software from Google. I’ve also linked the site to a Facebook Page, and a dedicated Twitter account.
I get as much pleasure from pimping my blog as I do from blogging. I’ve had no formal web design training of any kind, but my inner geek is having a real blast playing with all these tweaks and trying to get them to work as they are supposed to. Although the real hard work was done by intellectual giants I’ve never met, it is a privilege to be allowed to stand on their shoulders and mess their hair up. Thanks to everyone I’ve mentioned and anyone I’ve forgotten.
As for the content of my posts, I always aim to attribute and link to sources of non-original work, but should I ever forget please feel free to remind me.
